James Herbert Owenby age 62, of Sevierville, went to be with his Lord and Savior on Saturday, August 30, 2008. Herb was a devoted father, husband, grandfather, friend, coach, and athlete. He touched the lives of all the people he met. He was a world-class traveler and enjoyed every day of his precious life. He was also a well-known and gifted athlete. He was inducted into both the Sevier County High School and the Middle Tennessee State University’s Halls of Fame and still holds several records today. He retired from the Sevier County Board of Education in 2003.
He was preceded in death by his father, William Gordon Owenby Jr., his grandparents, Fred and Mabel Trotter and William and Janie Owenby, and special friend, Frank Buero.
Survivors include his wife, Charlotte Anne Owenby, his three children Wendy Kaye Patterson and husband Greg, Leslie Paige Justus and husband Jeff, and Chad Herbert Owenby; grandchildren Pailen Lenzie Maples and Rylie Alexis Patterson; beloved mother Blanche Trotter Wilson; sister Sandra Kay Grubb and husband Robert; and in-laws, sister in-law, brother in-law, step-granddaughter and several special cousins, nieces, nephews
Memorial contributions may be made to the athletic fund at Sevier County High School where Herb lettered in four sports from 1960-1964. The family wishes to thank the overwhelming number of family and friends who visited Herb in his final days. This special time of celebration completed his life. Also, special thanks goes to the UT cancer specialists, their staff, and UT Hospice for their loving care during his illness.
Funeral service 10 AM Wednesday in the West Chapel of Atchley Funeral Home with Dr. Randy Davis and Rev. Jerry Hyder officiating and eulogy delivered by Rex Henry Ogle. Interment will follow in Shiloh Cemetery in Pigeon Forge. Pall bearers include Bob Barker, Jerry Davis, Paul Henderson, Roy Marshall, Teddy Morris, Rex Henry Ogle, Johnny Sims and Gary Whaley. Honorary pall bearers include his teammates from Sevier County High School and Middle Tennessee State University and special friend, Mike “Boonie” Kleist.
