Clara Anita West, age 85, died peacefully at Mountain View Hospital in Las Vegas, NV on Saturday, October 9, 2010. Born October 6, 1925 in Knoxville, TN to Hester Elizabeth Whaley Bush and Gestle Conley Bush, she attended the University of Tennessee, where she met her husband, John Wyatt (JW) West, to whom she was married for 54 years. During WWII Clara answered her nation’s call for women workers, taking a job at the airport in Knoxville, where she also took flying lessons. In 1945 she moved to Florida, where she worked preparing the exteriors of airplanes to be used in the war. Clara and John married in June of 1947, and lived in Tennessee, Indiana, Mississippi, and Oklahoma before settling in San Luis Obispo, CA in 1968, where John served as Associate Dean of Agriculture at Cal Poly State University until retiring in 1991. While raising their three children, Clara worked part-time at the Cal Poly and Cuesta College bookstores, served as PTA president, was an Elder and Sunday School Teacher at the First Presbyterian Church, as well as an active member of the Cal Poly Women’s Club. Clara and John travelled to France, Italy, Egypt, Greece, Yemen, and throughout the United States. They moved to Las Vegas in 1999, where Clara became active in several bowling leagues and bridge clubs, and served as a Stephen Minister for the Mountain View Presbyterian Church. Clara was preceded in death by her brother, Gestle, Jr., in 1978; her son, Bob, in 1979 and her husband, John, in 2001. She is survived by her sister, Martha Garner, of Alexandria, VA, her son and daughter-in-law, Steve and Debbie West, of Las Vegas, NV; her daughter, Anita West, of Santa Maria, CA; her granddaughter, Amber West, of Brooklyn, NY; her grandson, Zeb West, of Austin, TX; and her dog, Shadow. Friends and relatives are welcome at Clara’s memorial service, to be held at 11am on Saturday, October 16 at Mountain View Presbyterian Church, 8601 Del Webb Blvd., Las Vegas, NV 89134. The family welcomes memorial contributions in Clara’s name in lieu of flowers to Mountain View Presbyterian Church (http://www.mtvwpresbchlv.org). Thanks to Rev. Linda L. Clara will be especially remembered for her generosity and kindness, her zest for life, her love of rollercoasters, and her jitterbug.
