Manes Funeral Home, Inc. John Harding (G.D.) Cooper (November 26, 1920 – September 13, 2011) John Harding (G.D.) Cooper, age 90, of Newport passed away Tuesday, September 13, 2011 in Greeneville TN. He was born in Cocke County, Tennessee on November 26, 1920, a son of the late Gus David and Mollie Lovell Cooper. John was retired from Wall Tube Metal Products Co. and was a lifelong farmer, continuing to work on his farm until declining health in recent months prevented his doing so. He was preceded in death by his wife of 67 years, Mary Clark Cooper; brothers Creston Cooper, Charles Kermit Cooper and Clayton Cooper; sisters, Mary Cooper Hurst, Edna Cooper Taylor, Christine Cooper Gregg and Margaret Cooper Strickland. He is survived by four children: daughter Charlene O’Dell and husband Norman, Unicoi; son Roger and wife Jalaa, Unicoi; William (Bill) Cooper, Murfreesboro; and son Michael and wife Nora, Greeneville. Grandchildren are Melissa Cooper Reece and husband Byron, Johnson City; Robert Cooper, Knoxville; Virginia O’Dell Mercer and husband Mike, Ooltewah; Stephanie Cooper, Knoxville; David Cooper and Taylor Cooper, Greeneville. Great-grandchildren are Amy and Andrew Mercer, Ooltewah and Kaitlyn and Max Reece, Johnson City. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews. The funeral service will be conducted at 7:00 pm Thursday, September 15, 2011 at Manes Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Tony Rutherford officiating. The family will receive friends in the chapel from 5:00 to 7:00 pm prior to the service. The graveside service and interment will be conducted Friday, September 16, 2011 at 11:00 am at Union Cemetery in Newport. Pallbearers will be Robert Cooper, David Cooper, Frankie Cooper, Jim Linderman, Mark Hill, Dale Hartsell, and Byron Reece.
