Leila Downey Hammond , passed away at her home on April 11, 2005, due to congestive heart failure. She was born in Greenback, Tennessee on November 7, 1921. Leila was a member of Everett Hill Baptist Church and former member of Bonny Kate Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution. She was preceded in death by: parents, Ike Downey and Nellie Berrong Downey ; brothers, Joe Downey and Lester Steve Downey ; sisters, Ida Mae Roberts and Mary Parr. Survivors include: daughter and son-in-law, Jeanie and Steve Burrell of Greenback; granddaughter, Dee Smith of Palm Springs, CA; grandson, David Scott McFadyen of Charleston, SC; great-grandchildren, Kerren, Adam, and Jason Smith, and Hailey Gordon; great-great-grandson, Brayden Smith; special niece and nephew, Charlotte and Tom Howard; sister-in-law, Barbara Downey ; several nephews and cousins. Leila and her family were especially grateful for the wonderful, caring nurses in the Cardiac Unit at Blount Memorial Hospital, the staff of Blount Memorial Hospice, and very special person, Vera McKelvey, from the Senior Citizens Home Assistance Service. The family will receive friends from 6:00 until 7:00 p.m. on Friday, April 15, 2005 in the Trinity Chapel of Smith Mortuary. Funeral service will follow at 7:00 p.m. with Dr. Allen Raines officiating. A private interment will be held on Saturday. In lieu of flowers, the family requests those wishing to make memorial donations do so to the Blount Memorial Hospice Mercy Fund, 1095 E. Lamar Alexander Pkwy., Maryville, TN 37804.
