ELLIS II, SAMUEL LAIRD (1925-2010) - "Sammy" Ellis passed away August 3, 2010. The son of Dr. Samuel Laird Ellis of Knoxville and Leona Roberts Ellis of Gainesboro, he was a sixth generation East Tennessean who, after serving in the U. S. Navy in the Second World War, attended the University of Tennessee and the University of Miami (Florida) Law School. Upon leaving Knoxville in 1954 with his wife and children, he embarked on an extraordinary lifelong odyssey of entrepreneurial adventures that carried him to every continent but Antarctica. Having created a multitude of businesses in, among others, the finance, automobile dealership, resort hotel, Scotch whiskey manufacture, oceanic shipping, thoroughbred race horse, and telecom industries, the vicissitudes of his unstinting efforts ended in financial ruin and failing health in Tampa, Florida, where he died surrounded by devoted loved ones, a gentle, smiling pauper. He is survived by his brother, Dr. Joseph R. Ellis, his former wife, Mary Ruth Ellis, with whom he was reunited in 2008, his sons Samuel Laird Ellis III and David Ross Ellis, his daughter Mary Ann Ellis, six grandchildren, and numerous cousins.
