GATLINBURG - A driver found dead in his vehicle this morning at a crash scene in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park has been identified as a Knoxville man, according to park officials.
Paul J. Rodgers, 47, of Burnett Creek Road, was wearing his seat belt, and the airbag deployed in his 2001 Chevrolet van, said park spokesman Bob Miller.
No signs of alcohol or drug use were found either.
Miller said that according to witnesses, Rodgers was headed east on Laurel Creek Road about 5.5 miles from the Townsend junction in Blount County when his van drifted off the right edge of the road, struck a tree and then slid about 15 feet down an embankment.
Park rangers arrived within 5 minutes of the crash. Rodgers was pronounced dead at the scene. There were no other occupants.
An investigation into the crash continues.
