Former CLB chair Donnie Holt dies suddenly
Author: Duay O'Neil
BYBEE-Former Cocke County Legislative Body Chairman Donnie Holt died suddenly of an apparent heart attack Tuesday while camping with his family at Warrior's Path State Park in Kingsport. He was 51.
Holt served as a CLB member representing the Third Civil District for 16 years from 1990-2006 and was elected chairman of the group by his peers for four years.
According to his family, Holt, the son of Willie Ann Holt and the late Melvin Holt, entered the political area at the urging of the late Emanuel Reed, another longtime member of the group and himself chairman for many years.
Holt was the eldest of three children, attended Centerview Elementary School and later graduated from Cocke County High School in 1976.
In 1980, he entered the emergency medical field as an EMT with the old Cocke County Ambulance Service.
He then earned his paramedic's license and over the years advanced his training by completing numerous other courses.
He, along with Jeff Holt and Jerry Holt, were co-owners of the Cocke County Ambulance Service. At the time of his death, he was employed by the Jefferson County EMS.
For many years he also served his community as captain of the Centerview Volunteer Fire Department.
More recently he had been involved with Riding High, Inc., a therapeutic riding program in Hamblen County, with his daughter Deanna. About two months ago they volunteered their time building fences and a barn for the program.
He was a member of Centerview Missionary Baptist Church and more recently had been attending Point Pleasant Baptist Church.
In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife Peggy Sane Holt, two daughters, Deanna, a rising senior at Cocke County High School, and Deidre, age 11, along with a sister Cindy Holt and brother Jeff "Smiley" Holt.
Funeral arrangements are being handled by Manes Funeral Home.
