ATCHLEY George Lafayette (G.L.) Atchley , Jr. died peacefully on December 11, 2009, after a courageous battle with stomach cancer. He was born July 1, 1933, in Sevierville, Tennessee, to George L. Atchley , Sr. and Athen Rakis Atchley . The family moved to Jacksonville in the early 1940s. G.L. was graduated from Robert E. Lee High School in 1951, and went on to the University of Florida. He spent many years working hard in the automobile parts and industrial supply businesses. When not at work or with family, he could most often be found outdoors, surrounded by nature. G.L. became a Master Mason in his early 20s, and earned the 33rd Degree in Masonry in 1979.He was very active for many years in the Scottish Rite, and the Wrecking Crew of the Morocco Shrine Temple. He is survived by his wife of 40 years, Gail; his children, Sherry Kaufman (Dave), George L. Atchley III, Shawn Atchley (Sherri), and Shannon Jennings (Jonathan); and his five grandchildren, who affectionately knew him as "Grumps," Zachary, Lauren and Hillary Kaufman; and Chloe and Alexia Atchley . He is also survived by his brother, Edward Atchley , and sister, Jan Bevan. A Celebration of his Life will be held at 3:00 p.m., Tuesday, December 15, 2009, at Ortega United Methodist Church, 4807 Roosevelt Blvd. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, Shriner's Children's Hospitals, or Community Hospice of Northeast Florida.
