ATCHLEY - Athen, widow of George L. Atchley Sr., died October 24, 1997 after a brief illness. Mrs. Atchley was born in Kentucky. In 1943 she moved to Jacksonville from Sevierville, TN with her husband. For 30 years she was manager and operator of beauty shop facilities at N.A.S. Jax, where she was the recipient of numerous awards and service certificates. She was a member of the Eastern Star and a charter member of the order of the Ameranth. Mrs. Atchley was a member of Murray Hill Baptist Church, where she had served as Assistant Director of Training Union classes. One of her causes was the Avant Guard Advocacy for Low Vision and Blind Children. She encouraged the mainstreaming of visually impaired children for equal access for educational and social opportunities. She is survived by three children: G.L. Atchley Jr. (Gail), Edward C. Atchley (Evelyn) and Jan Bevan (widow of Corky); seven grandchildren: Sherry Atchley Kaufman (David), George L. Atchley III, Edward C. Atchley Jr. (Julia), Chris Atchley, Shawn M. Atchley (Sherie), John Patrick Bevan and Shannon Love Atchley. She was blessed with four great-grandchildren: Zachary, Lauren and Hillary Kaufman and Chloe Atchley. Mrs. Atchley is also survived by one sister: Ina Rakis Waters, Sevierville, TN. Dr. Reece B. Sherman will officiate at a Memorial service, Sunday, October 26, 1997 at 4 PM in the chapel of HARDAGE-GIDDENS FUNERAL HOME, 729 S. Edgewood Ave. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be sent to Independent Living for Adult Blind, 101 West State St., Jacksonville, FL 32202.
