Susan Elaine Phillips Knoll, age 43, passed away at her home on December 27, 2010, after a valiant battle with brain cancer. Wife, mother, daughter, sister, aunt, and friend, she will be greatly missed by many.
She is survived by her husband of 21 years, Dr. David Knoll, daughter Olivia, 15, and son Andrew, 12; her parents, Bill and Gwen Phillips; older sister Sarah Shepherd, husband Eric, daughter Sophie; twin sister Sharon Earley, husband Robert, children Adam and Allison; and her extended Knoll family.
Born on October 27, 1967, in Maryville, Susan graduated from Maryville High School in 1985 and College of Charleston in 1989. She and David, high school sweethearts, were married in 1989 and lived in Atlanta, GA, Dayton, OH, and Tampa, FL before moving back to their hometown of Maryville in 2000. She was a member of First United Methodist Church and was a past-President of Junior Service League of Maryville. The Children’s Play Area for Relay for Life was renamed in her honor this past May.
Although she worked in her major field of business for several years, her passion in the last years of her life was teaching art to the preschoolers at Wesley Day School.
Her sense of humor, her comfortable nature, and her feisty personality combined to make Susan one of those people whom everyone loved to be around.
But above and beyond all of her interests and activities, Susan was a devoted mother. She spend the last 15+ years ensuring that her children’s days were filled with love, character, creativity, and fun.
Friends are invited to join her family in a service to celebrate Susan’s life at 2:00 PM on Thursday, December 30, at First United Methodist Church of Maryville with Reverends Larry and Brenda Carroll officiating. A receiving of friends will follow in Wesley Hall at the church. Friends may also call at their convenience at the funeral home. A private family interment service will be held.
The family gratefully acknowledges the professional and devoted care by the staff of the Blount Memorial Hospital.
Memorials may be made to Wesley Day School, c/o First United Methodist Church, 804 Montvale Station Road, Maryville, TN 37803 or to Maryville City Schools Foundation, 833 Lawrence Avenue, Maryville, TN 37803.
