  Leonard Henderson Oakley lived with his parents in the watershed of Little Panther Creek until his marriage. He and his wife Elizabeth Pethindy Grindstead were listed in the 1830 and 1840 Federal Census of Person County, North Carolina. Circa 1845, Leonard Henderson Oakley and his family migrated to Knox County, Tennessee. Family tradition indicated that this Oakley family came by covered wagon to "Big Spring" (now Fountain City - part of Knoxville, Knox County, Tennessee) area in Tennessee from North Carolina. Some of the older children of Leonard Henderson and Elizabeth Pethindy Grindstead Oakley married and settled along migration route from the state of North Carolina. Leonard Henderson and Elizabeth Pethindy Grindstead Oakley were listed in the 1850 Federal Census of Washington County, Tennessee. Circa 1857/58, Leonard Henderson Oakley and the remainder of his family migrated to the White Oak Flats community (now Gatlinburg), Sevier County, Tennessee.
