COCKRUM, GEORGE WASHINGTON - died peacefully on Tuesday, September 21, 2010 at Cookeville Regional Medical Center at the age of 89. George was born on February 22, 1921 in Jefferson County, Tennessee and served with Company G 309th Infantry from July 1942 until February 1946 where he held the American Theater Ribbon, European Theater Ribbon, Bronze Star, Good Conduct Medal and the Victory Medal. Mr. Cockrum was a past member of First Lutheran Church in Knoxville and was a retired employee of Robertshaw. He is preceded in death by his wife, Margaret Roth Cockrum; wife, Alma Bishop Cockrum; grandson, Timothy Gerald Jenkins; parents, Nora Helm and Robert Cockrum of Grainger County, TN; several brothers and sisters He is survived by his wife, Pearl Lively Flatt Cockrum of Cookeville; daughter and son-in-law, Margaret Ann and Gerald Jenkins of Knoxville; grandsons, Matt and Steve Jenkins; great-grandchildren, Jace, Seth, Mary and Jacob Jenkins; daughter, Sharon Cockrum of Knoxville; stepchildren, Joan and Barney Clark of Powell, TN, Pat and Mike Nichols of Jacksboro, TN, Pam and Andy Bouton of Aiken, SC, Dennis and Connie Maxwell of Baxter, TN, Dave and Gail Montgomery of Utica, MI, Mark and Michelle Flatt of Seymour, TN; fifteen step-grandchildren; five step-great-grandchildren; sister, Kathleen Cockrum of Washington, DC; several nieces and nephews. Family and friends will meet at 10:45 a.m. Friday at Greenwood Cemetery for an 11:00 a.m. graveside service with Reverend Brent Hall officiating.
