Delbert ''Del'' L. Hollingsworth Sr. enjoyed sports so much that even after he left his job at Lake-Sumter Community College, he regularly attended athletic functions.
The first athletic director and first basketball coach at the college, Hollingsworth helped make the school's early athletic ventures a success.
Hollingsworth, who retired from LSCC in 1985 after 23 years on the job, died Wednesday. He was 68.
''He was always a gentleman,'' said Suzanne Shaffer, a student of Hollingsworth's in 1962. She has been working in the school's library for the past 27 years and got to know Hollingsworth as both teacher and co-worker. Her husband, Walter, played for Hollingsworth's first basketball team.
''He was special to work with,'' Shaffer said. ''He helped with all of the athletic teams when they first started. We had cross country, track and baseball, too. He was always involved with all of the athletics here.''
Ann Sherry Herring, who worked with Hollingsworth at LSCC, said he never lost his love of the college.
''He was a wonderful guy,'' Herring said. ''He would come around the college long after he retired. He would always participate in fund-raisers and attend all the special retirement dinners.''
Born in Johnson City, Tenn., Hollingsworth graduated from the University of Tennessee in Knoxville and taught school there seven years before moving to Leesburg in 1962.
A master staff sergeant in the Air Force from 1951 to '54, Hollingsworth was an original faculty member at LSCC.
He was a 15-year member and past board member of the Leesburg Kiwanis.
