Almost 95 years to the day after Union Army Pvt. Henry Finger was buried, two lineage societies gathered at his final resting place to commemorate the veteran's unselfish devotion to his country and show their undying love for war comrades.
“We are here today to honor the service of a veteran during one of the darkest periods of our national history,” said Doug Fidler, the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War's Maj. William Anderson McTeer Camp No. 39 commander.
“The effects of that conflict — some good and others not — still linger today, especially in a county whose young men fought for armies on both sides of the conflict,” he said. About 13 Union companies and 8 Confederate companies were primarily composed of men from Blount and neighboring counties.
“Most of those soldiers of the Blue and Gray returned to their homes and put aside old grievances to live their lives together to promote the benefits of liberty for their friends and neighbors and their posterity,” Fidler said. “Cemeteries across the county bear silent memory to old enmities now at peace.
Great-granddaughter Cathy Jenkins, who organized the ceremony, read Finger's biography. The fifth-generation American was born on Jan. 1, 1830 to Jonas and Delila Sliger Finger in their Washington County home.
His parents later moved to Blount County, and Henry Finger worked as a farmer like many of his forefathers.
He enlisted on Aug. 31, 1862 in Barbourville, Ky. and mustered out on May 16, 1865 in Nashville. He married Eleanor Caroline Reavley on Feb. 17, 1870.
The couple had two children before Eleanor died in December 1878 when their daughter was only 5 months old. Henry Finger's sisters helped raise the children until he married Sarah Jane Rowland on Sept. 10, 1881.
The couple had six children, and their youngest child — Lucy Finger — is Jenkins' grandmother. Henry Finger farmed in the Clover Hill area and died on June 3, 1915.
Henry Finger's grave marking ceremony was the first for Camp No. 39, which was formed less than a year ago, Fidler said.
