Vernon Aubrey Self , of Friendsville, went to Heaven peacefully in his sleep on June 1, 2009, by his side the love of his life for 62 years. Vernon had been in failing health for several years, but surrendered to the arms of his Heavenly Father at 3 a.m. Monday morning. Vernon served our country with the Army; he earned honorary medals and rewards for his service. He had in past years beautiful rose gardens, vegetable gardens, and old-fashioned plant gardens. Vernon worked for Pinkerton Securities for the McGhee Tyson Airport Authority until his retirement. He loved his five constant companions: Lady, Shadow, China, special Tiny Poo, and Cat. Vernon was a member of Unity Baptist Church in Rockford. He was preceded in death by his son, David Vernon Self ; mother and father, Lucy Mae and Johnny T. Self ; granddaughters, Misty Ann Self , and Tracey Laura Ramsey; great-grandson, Cody River Gilmore; and stepgrandson, Jerry Patterson. Survivors include devoted wife of 62 years, Lola Mae Self ; daughters, Brenda Ann Rogers, Gwendolyn (Carol) Groover; sister, Charlotte (George) Breeden; nephew, Steve Breeden; niece, Pam (Carl) Self ; former daughter-in-law, Helen Self ; granddaughters, Melody Lee Raines, and Teena M. (Jason) Hayes; grandsons, Stacey Alan (Jennifer) Ramsey, Jackie (Darrell) Gredig; great-grandchildren, Chelsey Raines, Mattison R. Hayes, Caden Daniel Hayes, Logan Gredig, Catlin Moore, Sean Brown, Paige Noella, Alicia and Kiersten Patterson, Logan and Brandon Proffitt, Racheal Reagan, and Jenna Ramsey; great-great-granddaughter, Ryleigh Nicole Barnes; and many other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be 8 p.m. Wednesday, June 3, 2009, in the Memorial Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Monte Stevens, Dee Hubbard, and David Hutsell officiating. Family and friends will meet 11 a.m. Thursday, June 4, 2009, at Central Point Baptist Church in Rockford for a graveside service with Military Honors.
