Exa Valentine McMahan, age 96 of Sevierville, passed away Monday, February 3, 2014.
Exa's life was spent caring for her family and serving her community. She was a longtime member of Richardson Cove Baptist Church, and owned and operated McMahan Grocery on Bird's Creek for 27 years, closing in 1979. She was the last of eleven children born to the late Lloyd and Louisa Valentine.
Exa was preceded in death by her husband, Cleo McMahan; son, Don McMahan; daughter-in-law, Bernice McMahan; son-in-law, James A. "Bud" Messer, Jr.; grandson, Michael Harrison McMahan and great-granddaughter, Hallie MacKenna McMahan. She is also preceded in death by her brothers, Earnest, Sanberry, Theodore, Henderson and Wesley Valentine; sisters, Rena Owens, Avie Williams, Sarah Gilbert, Dolly Ownby, Ora Parton.
Survivors include her children, Harry McMahan and wife Miriam "Mick", Merle Messer, Jim McMahan and wife Portia, Judy Manis and husband Norman; daughter-in-law, Sandra McMahan; grandchildren, Elaine and Bill Mauter, Leslie and Ricky Atchley, Ted and Norva McMahan, Elizabeth and David McCarter, Lisa McMahan, Lynn and Peggy McMahan, Tracy and Wayne Schappacher, Christy and Robert Thompson, Jimmy and Larissa McMahan, Cecily and Jason Hamilton. Her great-grandchildren include Christopher Mauter and Ashley Farmer, Michael Mauter, Sarah Mauter, Emily-Grace McCarter, Andrew McCarter, Mitchell McMahan and fiancée Telena Smith, Matthew McMahan, Rebecca McMahan, Zack McMahan, Jessica McMahan, Tiffany McMahan, Avery Schappacher, Peyton Schappacher, Bryce, Reece and Susanna Hamilton; great-great-granddaughter, Hailey Mauter; sister-in-law, Mae Valentine; special family friend, Doris Parton; many special nieces, nephews and extended family members.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Richardson's Cove Baptist Church, 3107 Pittman Center Road, Sevierville, TN 37862.
The family will receive friends 4 PM-6:45 PM Thursday with funeral service to begin at 7 PM in the West Chapel of Atchley Funeral Home. Rev. Edward Parton, Rev. David Ayers and grandson Ted McMahan will officiate. Interment will be 10 AM Friday in Smoky Mountain Memory Gardens. Her grandsons will serve as pallbearers.
