Albert Lewis Hazelwood, 62, of Clinchfield, GA, entered into eternal rest with his Heavenly Father on May 6, 2009. Born in Newport, TN March 30, 1947, he attended Newport Grammar School and Cocke County High School. His untimely death resulted from cardiac arrest following a surgical procedure for cancer.
Mr. Hazelwood was a boilermaker by trade for thirty years and served as a member of the Brotherhood of Boiler Makers Local 26 in Savannah, GA. In 2004, he retired and began to embark upon a full time employment of his farm, horses, and helping his fellowman.
Honorably serving his country in the US Army, Mr. Hazelwood completed a tour of duty in Germany in 1967-68. He continued his patriotic service in the National Guard for eight years followed by ten years of service in the US Army Reserves.
Mr. Hazelwood's life exemplified one of his favorite Scriptures: Psalm 133, which speaks of the joy of brotherhood. His great joy of brotherhood was genuine in his service as a Mason and Shriner. He was a member of the Legend of Honor for twenty-five years in the Al Sihah Shrine Temple and veiled a Prophet in K Karassan Grotto of Atlanta in 1986.
As a member of the Tyrian Lodge III of Warren Robbins, GA, he became a Master Mason in 1983 and then a Master of Royal Secret of the 32nd degree of the Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite of Bodies in Macon, GA. In 1987 he became a Knight Commander of the Court of Honor and was a Senior Steward at the time of his death.
"As each has received a gift, use it to serve one another, as good stewards of God's varied grace," I Peter 4:10. "Al," as he was affectionately known by his Georgia friends and family, was one of God's good stewards to the hundreds of children who lived at the Macon Masonic Children's Home. He inspired them to love and respect the things that God has placed in our care: land, animals, and especially horses.
Services for Mr. Hazelwood were held May 9, 2009, in the main chapel of the Fisher Funeral Home in Cochran, GA. Brother Tracy Mays, Minister of Browndale Baptist Church, officiated at the service. Brother May's comforting words were appreciated by the family and hundreds of friends in attendance, who included many Masons and Shriners. In his message, Brother Mays shared how Mr. Hazelwood was both honored and humbled in his service to his country and his fellow man.
A Masonic service, along with military rites, honored Mr. Hazelwood at the interment at Little Bethel Church in Rebia, GA. The Masonic service was officiated by fellow Mason Eddie Ferguson of Warren Robbins, GA. Other fellow Masons spoke of their affection and appreciation for Al. Their testimonies also spoke of Al's love for his country, fellow man, family, God's land, animals, and most of all his love for his Heavenly Father.
Mr. Hazelwood was preceded in death by his father Inman McAndrew, grandparents Ed Ray and Everett 'Sarge' and Eula Mae Grooms Lakin, Edward and Lucy Mae Rinehart McAndrew; and his great-grandparents Flint Ray and Millie Jane Ray and Milas and Lilley Bell Justus Grooms.
Survivors include his beloved wife of twenty-six years Joan Mullis Hazelwood of the home; son Keith Hazelwood of Newport; daughter Onna H. Moore of Lakeland, FL; mother Betty Ray McAndrew of Newport; sisters Senator Gail M. Buckner (Charlie) of GA; Dyann M. Bible (David) of Newport; brother Inman Ray McAndrew of GA; and several nieces and nephews.
