Ralph Payne, 80, of Lenoir City, went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, Dec. 7, 2004, in his home with his loved ones after a courageous battle with cancer. He was born Feb. 22, 1924, in Copper Hill, Tenn., to John and Lennie Payne. Ralph served in the U. S. Navy during World War II in the Pacific Theater. He was retired from ORNL X-10 after 32 years of service as a pipefitter. Ralph was also a 50 year member of the UA (United Association) of Pipefitters.
After retirement he worked independently as a professional handyman. He lived 30 years in Maryville before moving to Lenoir City. He loved his family very much and was a devoted husband to his wife, Lottie who suffers from Alzheimer's Disease. He visited her faithfully at the nursing home as long as he could. He was a wonderful father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, uncle and friend to all he met. Many described Ralph Payne as a man who never met a stranger.
He was kind, compassionate, funny, and had a huge heart. He will be sorely missed by all who crossed paths with him. He had many passions and talents, including nature, fishing, gardening, and storytelling. He excelled at everything he did. Ralph was a member of Pleasant Hill Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Mary Ellen Garrett. Survived by his loving wife, Lottie Taylor Payne, born and raised in Violet, N.C.; three children and their families: daughter, Joan Payne Erwin and son-in-law, Mark Erwin of Charlotte, N.C., sons and daughters-in-law, Mike and Sandy Payne of Lenoir City, Ken and Kathy Payne of Maryville; six grandchildren: Angela Payne Powell of Knoxville, Jennifer Erwin and Missy Erwin of Charlotte, N.C., Jason Payne of Lenoir City, Jacob Stout and Kayla Payne of Maryville; three great-granddaughters, Emily Powell, Macy Powell and Della Erwin; brothers, William Payne of Cleveland, Tenn., Earl Payne of Copper Hill, Tenn.; sister, Lorraine Ledford of Belmont, N.C.; many nieces and nephews. The body lay in state from 10 to 11 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 9, at Pleasant Hill Baptist Church in Lenoir City. Funeral services followed at 11 a.m. at the church with Rev. Glenn Gamble officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery. The family received friends in the church fellowship hall following the graveside service. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be made to: American Cancer Society, Baptist Hospice or The Alzheimer's Association
