COMBS, MR. T. RALPH - age 92, passed away peacefully with loved ones at his side, March 5, 2010 at Jefferson Memorial Hospital. T. Ralph was born April 15, 1917 in Grainger County where he grew up. After graduating from Rutledge High School in 1934, he served overseas during World War II, both in the Army and the Air Force. He attended Carson-Newman College, Cambridge University, and graduated from The University of Tennessee with a degree in Agriculture Education. He began his teaching career at Parrottsville High School teaching vocational agriculture, and later taught at Washburn and Rutledge High Schools where both he and his students were active in the Future Farmers of America. Upon his retirement in 1978, he continued to own and operate one of the largest dairy farms in Grainger County. Both he and his wife Lorena were active in their community having served on the Soil Conservation Board, Farmer's Co-op, and Farm Bureau. T. Ralph was an avid "Vol" fan and enjoyed watching both U.T. football and basketball. He was a life long member of Shiloh United Methodist Church, and he spoke fondly of the many former students, friends, colleagues, and employees that he had known throughout his lifetime. He was preceded in death by his wife of 54 years, Mrs. Lorena Joyce Combs; parents, A.V. and Hattie Combs, Sr.; sisters, Mary V. Hodge, and Lorraine Clapp; brothers, Emert Combs, A.V. Combs, Jr., and Paul Combs; nephews, Kenny, Joe, and Steve Combs. Survivors include nieces and nephews, Jack Hodge, Sue Dunn, Herky Combs, Sam Combs, Terry Combs, Ann Watson, Richard Cochran, Charles Robinson, Darlene Norton, and Janice Dyer; special great nieces and nephews, Rhonda Robinson, Doug Cochran, Melanie Cochran Cox, and Emily Watson; also special caregivers, "Nan" Barbara Brock, and Debbie Evans. Funeral services will be 8:00 p.m. Monday, March 8, 2010 in the chapel of Smith-Reagan Funeral Home in Rutledge with Rev. Fred Chandler officiating. Family and friends will gather at 10:45 a.m. on Tuesday for an 11:00 a.m. graveside service in Shiloh United Methodist Church Cemetery with military honors. The family will receive friends Monday evening, 5:00 p.m. till 8:00 p.m. prior to services at the funeral home.
