McCarter announces candidacy for CLB
Michael McCarter, Morrell Springs Road, announced that he will seek election as a county commissioner in post one of the Sixth District in the upcoming August general election. McCarter previously served as county commissioner for the Sixth District from 1998 until 2002. "I am looking forward in serving the Sixth District once again" I am eager to go back to work for the District and I ask for your vote and support."
McCarter is married to Sharon Hiers of Parrottsville. They have two children, 8 year old Caleb McCarter, a second grader, and 6 year old Bryson McCarter, a kindergartener. Both children attend Newport Grammar School.
He is the son of Rosette "Rosie" McCarter of Newport and the late David "Dug" McCarter.
McCarter is a graduate of Cosby High School and attended both Walter State Community College in Morristown and the University of Tennessee in Knoxville, where his studies included criminal justice and political science.
McCarter was appointed as Cocke County Judicial Commissioner in the mid 90's until he took a position at the Cocke County Sheriff's Department in 1995. He then went to work for the Cocke County Juvenile Court where he served as Juvenile Court Clerk. In 1998, McCarter returned to the Sheriff's Department to work for Sheriff D.C. Ramsey. He served the Sheriff's Department in various capacities until 2006 when he accepted a position with Bendell Services Inc. (later known as Tennessee Community Health Services) in their drug and alcohol treatment program.
"I have seen what drug abuse has done to our community and it worries me," said McCarter. "As a court officer, deputy sheriff and as a treatment provider. I have seen the drug problem in our area becoming worse. We must do something in our county to help educate our youth to keep them from following this self destructive course."
McCarter has served as vice chairman of the CLB, chairman of both public safety and solid waste/landfill committees. He also has served on the general and finance committees.
"We must keep all cost reasonable and hold county officials accountable for their budgets," he said. "We must work to keep our taxes low. We must focus on bringing jobs that are good for the people in our county.
"My primary concern is to help make our county a better place to live. Election day, I ask for your vote and support as your county commissioner."
