Bowman, Joseph William - age 85, of Fountain City, has gone to be with the Lord. He passed away 11:00 a.m. Saturday, December 1, 2001 at Baptist Hospital. Mr. Bowman was a long time member of Sevier Heights Baptist Church and served as a deacon for many years. He was born in Proctor, NC, the son of Roy and Beatrice (Carpenter) Bowman. He grew up in Graham County, NC where he graduated from High School at the age of 15. He moved to Knoxville to continue his education and lived here the rest of his life. He served in the Navy during WWII and retired from Sears with over 42 years of service. Mr. Bowman was a member past president and of the Y's Mens Club, AARP, Friendly Club of Sevier Heights, Sears Retiree Club, Bright Hope Lodge # 557-F&AM and 32nd degree Scottish Rite mason. He worked with many home-bound senior citizens which he felt the lord had led him to do. He was a badminton champion, winning many titles in the Southeast. Preceded in death by his loving wife of 61 years, Ruby Beatrice Wolfe Bowman, and brother, Clyde Bowman.
Survivors
Survivors include sons, Robert J. Bowman, Knoxville, William C. Bowman and wife Linda, Chattanooga; grandson, Mark Bowman and wife Lori, Chattanooga; granddaughters, Stephanie Grant and husband Dan, Chattanooga, Suzanne Bowman, Knoxville, Christie Bandy and husband Ben, Melissa Albritton and husband Brandon, all of Chattanooga; great grandchildren, Alex and Meridth Bowman, Kelsey Grant, Kyla Bandy and Payton Albritton, all of Chatanooga. Also, Claude and Tom Carpenter and Billie Foust who were like brothers and a sister whom were raised with him by his grandmother, Cordelia Carpenter and Uncle, Herbert and Aunt, Mamie Carpenter; half sisters and brother; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Service
Funeral 7:30 p.m. Monday, December 3, 2001 at Berry Chapel, Chapman Highway. Dr. Hollie Miller and Dr. Bob Burch officiating. Memorials may be made to the Sevier Height Building Fund, 3232 Alcoa Highway, Knoxville, TN. 37920. Pallbearers will be Bill and David Taylor, Mike Crowder, Richard Wolfe, Mark Bowman and Dan Grant. Family and friends will meet at Berry Funeral Home at 12 Noon Tuesday and proceed in procession at 12:20 to Knob Creek Cemetery, Sevier County, for a 1 p.m. interment service. Family will receive friends 5:30 p.m. till 7:30 p.m. Monday, prior to the funeral service in the Chapel of Berry Funeral Home.
