CATON , DR. IRMA JEANNE - University of North Texas Emeritus Professor of Kinesiology and the first woman resident of the Southland Conference, died Monday, June 7, 2004 at the Denton Regional Health Center. A native of Newport, Tenn., she received the BS from East Tennessee State University in 1946, the MS from the University of Tennessee in 1949, and the Ed. D from the University of Tennessee in 1962. Joining the UNT faculty in 1962, Dr. Caton exemplified leadership through her positions including chairperson of the Department of Health, Physical Education, and Recreation. She was designated an Honor Professor for excellence in teaching by her students and she received the Distinguished Teacher Award from the Alumni Association. Irma was a leader and officer in many professional state, regional and national organizations including the Texas Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance the Southern Association of Physical Education for College Women and the Southern District Association of Health, Physical Education and Recreation and Dance. Numerous awards include the Honor Award from American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance the David Brace Award presented by TAHPERD Honor from the Southern District Alliance Honor Award from the Governor's Commission on Physical Fitness and Honor Award from Delta Psi Kappa. Upon her retirement in 1989, Irma continued serving her community in several community organizations. She was preceded in death by her parents, Ben D. Caton , Sr. and Bernice Easterly Caton . Irma is survived by her sister in law, Edna M. Caton , Newport, Tenn. niece, Susan Krueger, North Andover, MA nephew, Benjamin D. Caton , III, Johnson City, Tenn. niece, Josephine Nodell, Knoxville, Tenn. 5 great nieces 2 great nephews and many cousins. The family will receive friends on Sunday June 13, 2 p.m. at English Mountain Christian Church. A memorial service will follow at 3 p.m. and subsequent burial at Union Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the First Christian Church, 1203 North Fulton, Denton, TX 76201, the Irma J. Caton Scholarship Endowment, UNT, Denton, TX. Manes Funeral Home in charge.
