JOHNSON CITY, TN-Dr. Benjamin D. Caton, a Newport native, has been honored as East Tennessee State University's recipient of the Distinguished Faculty Award for Service for 2013.
ETSU bestowed its highest honors upon Caton and two other professors Friday, August 23. Also honored were Travis Graves, who received the Distinguished Faculty Award in Teaching and Dr. Gregory A. Ordway, professor of pharmacology and interim chair for the ETSU Department of Biomedical Sciences in the James H. Quillen College of Medicine, who received the Distinguished Faculty Award in Research.
Caton, Graves, and Ordway were nominated and selected by their faculty peers. Each received a medallion, a plaque, and a check for $5,000 provided by the ETSU Foundation during the annual Faculty Convocation.
Caton is a professor of piano and aural skills in the ETSU Department of Music in the College of Arts and Sciences. His campus record of service includes four brief periods as department chair and seven years as the department’s graduate coordinator. He played an integral part in establishing ETSU as an All-Steinway School and has been active on councils and committees in both practice and performance.
A member of the Tennessee Music Teachers Association (TMTA), the Music Teachers National Association (MTNA) and Appalachian Music Teachers Association (AMTA), Dr. Caton has served each organization in numerous ways and was the TMTA’s Distinguished Service Award recipient in 2004.
A former elementary school music teacher, Caton joined the ETSU music faculty in 1972 and holds his bachelor’s degree from ETSU and his master’s and doctoral degrees from Ohio State University.
He is the son of the late Benjamin and Edna (Mason) Caton of Newport and graduated from Cocke County High School in 1964.
