Elvis pays visit to CCHS Class of 1957

NEWPORT—A well-known entertainer came out of retirement to perform for the Cocke County High School Class of 1957 at their recent 56th reunion held at Fox and Hounds banquet hall.
At age 78, Elvis, aka Dr. Michael Heskett, is still able to shake, rattle, roll, and groove and cause several ladies to swoon. Jailhouse Rock, recorded in 1957, was the class’s favorite song.
Arlen Allen welcomed the 55 classmates and guests, and Hugh Hixson gave the invocation. Classmate Lillian Allen Altheide, who had died since last year’s reunion, and the 42 other deceased classmates were remembered in a ceremony led by Claudette Dunn Shults.
The tables were decorated with cans of Van Camp’s Pork-and-Beans with a poem penned by Lynne Phillips Smith. She noted that most of the classmates or members of their families had, at one time, worked at Stokely-Van Camp. The beans were also a remembrance of the class’s first reunion in 1967, when she provided Pork-and-Beans as part of the menu.
The prestigious 2013 Rooster of the Year award was presented to Jeanne Yater Birdwell for her many ongoing contributions to the class. Jeanne moved to Newport in the early 1950s and quickly became a class favorite. After college, she returned to Cocke County where she was active in business, community, and church affairs. She helped to plan many of the reunions and opened her home for the 50th reunion class breakfast. She was presented with a plaque and a blanket in the black and red school colors. She now lives in Gatlinburg.
Earlier in the day, Prentice Sexton hosted a brunch for class members at the Taste of Dandridge.
