Troy E. Barnes , Sr., 82, a resident of the Leavenworth area for 57 years, died Friday evening, May 21, 1999, in Highline Convalescent Center following a stroke. He was born on Aug. 8, 1916 in Haywood, NC to Henry and Ruthie (Bright) Barnes . The family later moved to the Sevierville, TN area, where he grew up and received his early education. In 1937 he moved to Washington to work in the timber industry and he worked as a logger near Leavenworth until returning to Sevierville to marry Bernice Lamons on Sept. 16, 1944. They moved to Leavenworth in 1949 and Troy worked at Peshastin Lumber and Box, later becoming Pack River Forest Products until his retirement in 1982. Troy was an avid fisherman and spent his free time hiking and fishing the Icicle basin with his wife and family. He was a very humble and gracious man who enjoyed his large vegetable garden and fruit trees, gladly sharing produce with family and friends. He was a member of the Western Council of Industrial Workers, Local #2739; Mt. Calvary Primitive Baptist Church in Dryden; Chumstick Grange #819 in Leavenworth and the Rambling Recs Camper Club. Survivors include his daughter and son-in-law, Elizabeth and Larry Hayes; son, Troy E. Barnes , Jr.; and his daughter and son-in-law, Kay and Robert Vesper, all of Leavenworth; two granddaughters, Shawna Green of Sacramento, CA and Rachel Bolelli of Leavenworth; five sisters, Mary Thomas of Cashmere; Hazel Rolen and Ethel Harrell, both of Sevierville, TN; Letha Rolen of Wenatchee and Myrtle Floyd of East Wenatchee. He was preceded in death by his wife, Bernice on Jan. 10, 1988; two sisters, Lona Rayfield and Sarah C. Styles, three brothers, Ellis Barnes , Willie Barnes and Wayne Barnes . A graveside service of commemoration to celebrate the life of Troy E. Barnes , Sr., will be conducted at 2 p.m., Thursday afternoon, May 27, 1999 at the gravesite in Mt. View Cemetery, with Pastor Bob Bauer, officiating. Interment will follow. The family will receive friends, Wednesday evening May 26, 1999 between 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. at the Ward's Funeral Chapel.
