Autopsy confirms pregnant woman's suspicious death as homicide
By Hayes Hickman and Don Jacobs
Editor's note: Robin Owens, mother of Brittany Caroline Eldridge, was misidentified in an earlier version of this story.
Someone must know something.
Family members were certain of at least that much as they made a public plea for help in solving the murder of Brittany Caroline Eldridge, a 25-year-old pregnant woman whose body was discovered inside her Knoxville apartment Tuesday.
Autopsy results Wednesday confirmed investigators' initial suspicions that Eldridge, who was 8½ months pregnant with her first child, was the victim of a homicide.
Hours later about 40 people gathered for a candlelight vigil outside her door at Cross Creek Apartments off Western Avenue as police continued to remove potential evidence from the ground-floor unit.
"Just please, if anybody just even heard something, just let it be known, don't be afraid," said her cousin, Velma Smith. "Or if you saw anything, or even heard a rumor, just say it because it might be true. She deserves justice and Zeke, her baby, does, too."
Eldridge, an account representative with Clayton Homes, was remembered by loved ones as an intelligent, positive woman, who demonstrated strength throughout what had been a tumultuous year for her.
Eldridge was divorced in July, according to court records, which include a signed agreement by both parties stating she was not pregnant at the time of divorce. Family members said she was no longer involved with her unborn child's father, either, but nevertheless ecstatic at the prospect of soon becoming a mother.
"My sister inspired me to do something great with my life," said her older brother, Jeffery Sherwood, who expects to graduate from South College next summer. "And she'll be looking down on me when I do."
Others wavered between disbelief and outrage that someone would do any harm to an expecting mother.
"I just want the person to pay, to pay dearly," said Pam Hurst, her aunt.
Eldridge's mother, Robin Owens — who had found her daughter only a day earlier, after learning Eldridge had not reported to work — simply asked for support.
"We need lots of prayers," Ogle said. "I don't know how I'm going to get through this."
The Knoxville Police Department has not released the exact cause of death, citing the ongoing investigation. Investigators have conducted multiple interviews, although no one has been taken into custody.
And prosecutors are awaiting the medical examiner's determination of whether Eldridge's unborn infant was a viable fetus, said John Gill, special counsel to Knox County District Attorney General Randy Nichols.
"If the fetus was viable," said Gill, "there will be two homicide prosecutions."
