SPARTANBURG, SC-- Harry Carl Hoppes, Jr., husband of the late Naomi Banks Hoppes, died Wednesday, May 20, 2009.
Harry was born in Spartanburg on May 24, 1933, to the late Carl and Elizabeth Hawkins Hoppes. He graduated from Cecil's Business College and retired from the Spartanburg Herald Journal/NY Times. Harry was a life member of Calhoun Masonic Lodge, a member of the Croft Ruritan and St. Luke United Methodist Church. He proudly served in the United States Navy during the Korean War on the DE 135 USS Weiss and the LST 887 USS Lexington.
Harry is survived by a son, David K. Hoppes and his wife Kathy of Spartanburg; a daughter, Donna Naomi DeYoung of Moore, SC; and a sister, Dianne Hoppes Cartee of Spartanburg. He was blessed with a grandchild, Ryan Michael DeYoung and several nieces and nephews. Harry was predeceased by a brother, Johnny R. Hoppes; and a sister, Robbie E. Bennett.
The family will receive friends at Dunbar Funeral Home on Friday, May 22, 2009, from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM. Funeral Services will be Saturday, May 23, 2009 at 1:00 PM at St. Luke United Methodist Church conducted by the Rev. Richard D. Lewis. Burial will follow with Masonic Rites at Greenlawn Memorial Gardens.
In remembrance of Harry, memorials may be made to St. Luke United Methodist Church, 105 McKay Avenue, Spartanburg, SC 29302 or Croft Rescue 18, 250 Cedar Springs Avenue, Spartanburg, SC 29302.
The family is at the son's home, 1777 Carolina Country Club Road, Spartanburg.
