Luther Harris Headrick, age 87, passed away Saturday, January 4, 2014 at LeConte Medical Center. He was a lifelong resident of Wears Valley. Mr. Headrick was of the Baptist Faith and an ordained deacon. He was a Mason in the Masonic Lodge 197 in Sevierville, and retired from the BellSouth Telephone Company in 1988 after 43 years of service.
A decorated veteran of World War II, serving as a combat infantryman in the European Theater during the invasion of Germany, Mr. Headrick received a Purple Heart and a Bronze Star, plus several participation and commendation ribbons in the meritorious service of his country. After his honorable discharge from the Army in 1945, he returned to Sevier County and enrolled in Sevier County High School where he played football and earned his high school diploma.
He was preceded in death by: his parents, Luther A. and Emma Fox Headrick; brothers and sisters-in-law, Paul Hedrick, Eugene and Ruth Hedrick, and Harold and Ila Hedrick; brother-in-law, Rudolph Stout; father-in-law and mother-in-law, J. Newt and Viola C. Lawson; brothers-in-law and wives, Paul W. and L.J. Lawson, Henry and Ruth Lawson, and Frank and Amalee Lawson; sisters-in-law and husbands, Ada and Ed McPherson, Ina and Maurice Ownby, and Ruby and James Drinnen; and brothers-in-law, Alvin Autrey and Loren Whaley.
Survivors include: his wife of 66 years, Floy Rose Lawson Headrick; son, Joseph L. Headrick; daughter, Sharon Rose Herrell and husband Jesse; sisters, Mary Lou Ownby and husband Shirl, and Mildred Stout; sisters-in-law, Johnnie Autrey, Kate Hedrick, and Aureta Whaley; and many nieces, nephews, and friends – especially great-nephew Travis Shults and family (Suzanne, Jesse, and Hannah) and caregiver, Beverly Barkley – as well as many extended family members.
The family would like to offer many heartfelt thanks for the sensitivity and care by the doctors, nurses, and staff at LeConte Medical Center during his stay there.
In lieu of flowers, memorials donations may be made to the Mattox Cemetery Fund, c/o Johnnie Autrey, 3425 Cotter Circle, Sevierville, TN 37862, or to your favorite charity.
The family will receive friends 5-7 PM Wednesday, January 8, 2014, with funeral service to follow at 7 PM in the East Chapel of Atchley Funeral Home. Family and friends will meet at 3 PM Thursday, January 9, 2014 in Mattox Cemetery for interment with Military Honors provided by American Legion Post 104.
