John W. Woodiel Jr., a Republican activist, died March 5 of cancer at his home. He was 76. Mr. Woodiel was born in Enola, Ark., and lived in Luling for 48 years. A Navy veteran of World War II, he served in the Pacific Theater aboard the aircraft carrier USS Enterprise. He earned a bachelor of science degree in chemistry in 1949 from Arkansas State Teachers College. He was employed by Lion Oil/Monsanto for 21 years and retired from Woodiel Construction Co. Inc., which he founded in 1973. Mr. Woodiel organized the St. Charles Parish Republican Party in 1965 and served for many years as chairman of the parish Republican Executive Committee. He was elected in 1968 to the first of five terms representing St. Charles Parish on the Republican State Central Committee and worked on local, state and national Republican campaigns. He attended the 1984 Republican national convention as an alternate delegate and was a member of the Lafourche Basin Levee Commission from 1980 to 1984. He was a parishioner of Holy Family Catholic Church and had been a parishioner of St. Anthony Catholic Church in Luling. He served on the construction committees of both churches and was an usher at Holy Family. He was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Latinaires Dance Club. Survivors include his wife, Dorothy Breyel Woodiel; two sons, John Woodiel III of Dallas and Christopher Davis Woodiel of Baton Rouge; a daughter, Deborah W. Spencer of Knoxville, Tenn.; two sisters, Syble Sims of Austin, Ark., and Betty Dodgen-Mundt of Sacramento, Calif.; six granddaughters; and a great-granddaughter. A Mass will be said today at 11 a.m. at Holy Family Catholic Church in Luling. Visitation will be at 9 a.m. Burial will be in St. Charles Cemetery in Luling. Westside Leitz-Eagan Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
