MULLINS, LAWRENCE - age 85, of Knoxville, passed away on Tuesday, February 5, 2002, at Fort Sanders Regional Medical Center. He was a member of Central Baptist Church of Fountain City. He was employed by the U. S. Postal Service for 42 years, retiring as the Chief Accountant of the U. S. Post Office in Knoxville and the Eastern Tennessee Region. He served in the U. S. Army during World War II, seeing active ground combat for three years in the European African Middle Eastern Theatre of Operations. He served in the 88th Infantry Division (Italian Campaign) which liberated Naples and Rome in Italy before moving northward to the Brenner Pass over the Alps (1944-45). Mr. Mullins was awarded the Bronze Star Medal. He was an active member of the following organizations: National Postal Employees Union, North Knoxville, Civitan Club, NARFE, and was a charter member of the Belle Morris-Whittle Springs Community Association. He is survived by his wife, Juanita Frost Mullins; his son and daughter-in-law, Denny and Lynne Mullins; his daughter and son-in-law, Cheryl and Philip Mathias; his brother and sister-in-law, Shields and Naomi Mullins; four grandchildren, Derek and Ashley Mathias and Piper and Spencer Mullins, and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his sister, Reba Mullins Bates. The family will receive friends 12 Noon - 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Rose Mortuary Broadway Chapel, before traveling in procession to Lynnhurst Cemetery for a 2 p.m. graveside service with Rev. Ron Mouser officiating. Pallbearers: Bob Perry, David Hodge, Herb Arnett, Don Statzer, Derex Mathias & Spencer Mullins, Jesse Blair and Greg Walters. The Married Couples Sunday School Class and North Knoxville Civitan Club will serve as honorary pallbearers. Military Honors will be presented by the Volunteer State Veterans Honor Guard. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Family Life Center Equipment Fund of Central Baptist Church of Fountain City, 5364 N. Broadway, Knoxville, TN 37918.
