MAYS, MARY ELIZABETH CRAIG (Nanny) passed away Monday, February 11, 2002 at NHC Healthcare. Mrs. Mays was born August 30, 1906 to parents A.T. and Mary Craig. She joined Lonsdale United Methodist Church in 1920 and has been a faithful member for 81 years. On November 5, 1923, she married Leon Mays and they had celebrated 53 years of marriage at the time of his death in August, 1977. Together they raised three sons, Lowry , Bruce, and Harold. Early in Mrs. Mays' life, it became clear that her calling was to serve others-whether it was providing a meal or a place to stay for a family member, taking care of patients at St. Mary's Hospital, being an active member of her church, or loving and nurturing her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Mrs. Mays was preceded in death by parents, brothers Oscar, Paul and Ralph Craig and sisters Charlotte Craig, Mae Cox and Annette Phillips. She is survived by sons and daughters-in-law Lowry and Helen Mays, Bruce and Betty Mays, Knoxville, and Harold and Paula Mays, Fayetteville, Arkansas; twelve grandchildren, twenty-four great-children and three great-great grandchildren. The family will receive friends Wednesday, February 13, from 6 pm until 8 pm with the funeral service at 8 pm at Lonsdale United Methodist Church, led by Reverend Mark Dowell. Family and friends will meet at Highland Memorial Cemetery on Thursday, February 14 at 11:00 am for interment, with her grandsons serving as pallbearers. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Building Fund, Lonsdale United Methodist Church, 1105 Katherine Avenue, Knoxville, TN 37921. Mynatt's in charge of arrangements.
