EVERS CASE WITNESS DENNIS DIES
Delmar Dennis , one of the key witnesses in the murder trial of Byron De La Beckwith for the killing of civil rights leader Medgar Evers, died of a heart attack over the weekend in Sevierville. He was 56.
Dennis died Saturday in a Sevierville hospital after suffering the heart attack Friday night. Gravesite services are scheduled for 10 a.m. today at Smoky Mountain Memory Gardens in Sevierville.
Dennis , described as an FBI informant, testified in Beckwith's 1994 trial that he overheard Beckwith brag about shooting Evers during a Ku Klan Klan rally in Mississippi.
Dennis ' testimony was sought after his comments on Beckwith appeared in a book on the Ku Klux Klan.
Evers, then Mississippi field secretary for the NAACP, was gunned down in the driveway of his Jackson home on June 12, 1963.
Mississippi prosecutors said Dennis ' testimony and the discovery of the murder weapon were keys to convicting Beckwith.
Survivors include his wife, Nancy; three daughters; two sons; two brothers; two sisters; and seven grandchildren.
