Burton Doyle Merritt, age 77, passed on into the Kingdom of Heaven on Sunday, March 28, 2010 at his home in Knoxville, TN after a courageous battle with esophageal cancer.
He was preceded in death by parents, Carl Emerson and Mattie Josephine Merritt; brothers,Willard, Ray, and Roy Merritt; sisters, Opal Merritt Johnson and Jewel Merritt Synder.
Survived by his wife of 59 years, Mary Charles Merritt; children, Douglas Burton Merritt and wife, Kimra, of Nolensville, TN, Pamela Ann Newman and husband, Mike, of Nashville, TN , and Charles Richard Merritt of Knoxville; grandchildren, Sydney Nicole Merritt Jenkins, Nicholas Brandon Newman and wife, Melissa, Emily Michael( Newman) Castle and husband, Steve, Lara Allyn Merritt, and Joshua Merritt Newman and wife, Rachel; great- grandchildren, Kenneth Charles Merritt, Hannah Merritt Rhodes, Caleb Allen Castle, Brooke Anne Castle, and Mary Grace Jenkins; sisters, Gertrude Keener and husband, Jack, Mattie Cox and husband, Jack, Elaine Harkleroad and husband, Raymond, Carlie Mechler and husband, John; sister-in-law, Evelyn Rucker and husband, Wayne; and many beloved nieces and nephews.
For the past 53 years he had been an active member of Alice Bell Baptist Church and the Fellowship Sunday School Class. Burton was a 1950 graduate of Horace Maynard High School. He retired from Sears & Roebuck Co. after nearly 40 years of service.
Serving as pallbearers: Douglas Burton Merritt, Charles Richard Merritt, James Michael Newman, Nicholas Brandon Newman, Joshua Merritt Newman and Steven Thomas Castle.
The family will receive friends, March 30, 2010 from 5:30-7pm in the Lynnhurst-Greenwood Chapel. Funeral services will follow at 7pm with Rev. Toby Everett officiating. Interment services will be at Lynnhurst Cemetery on Wednesday, March 31, 2010 at 11am. Family and friends will meet in the Chapel at 10:30am.
