Homicide probe continues: Maryville man’s cause of death remains mystery
The Blount County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigation Division is continuing its investigation into the apparent homicide of a man that occurred early Monday morning at a home on the 3200 block of Turkey Pen Branch Road in Maryville.
Arthur Walter Downey, 66, was pronounced dead on the scene at his residence. Investigators were calling it a homicide but did not identify the cause of death.
According to a press release, the sheriff’s office responded to Downey’s residence at about 12:30 a.m. after family members found him unresponsive.
There have been no new developments in the case, according to the sheriff’s office.
Downey’s funeral notice indicated that he had battled cancer for about a year. Family members could not be reached for comment.
Downey was employed by the Blount County School System and Blount County Highway Department for several years.
Blount County Road Superintendent Bill Dunlap said that Downey’s father owned a saw mill in his neighborhood, known as the Christie Hill community, and Downey was known as a family man.
“He never got into any trouble. He just came in and did his job,” Dunlap said. “He loved to deer hunt and bring deer meat in, and he would normally bring in a deer roast. He loved to hunt and fish — he was just an old country boy.”
Funeral services will be held Thursday at New Providence Primitive Baptist Church in Maryville.
