Long-time Cadillac resident and businessman Ray Bricault passed away Sunday, May 30, at his home in Chicago after a brief illness. He was 88.
Raymond Henry Bricault Jr. was born Aug. 4, 1921 in Saginaw to Raymond H. and Anna (Zito) Bricault. He attended Mt. Carmel Elementary and High School before embarking on two years of study at the Arthur Hill Trade School, all in Saginaw.
In 1942, he followed three of his brothers into military service, volunteering for the Navy, where he served as a landing craft pilot on the U.S. Kershaw in the Pacific Theater for three years.
Upon his return to civilian life in 1945, he managed a restaurant in Midland before learning of a restaurant for sale in Cadillac, the Snow White Sandwich Shoppe, which he purchased and renovated in 1947. He quickly became a fixture on Mitchell Street, serving residents and visitors with a cheerful demeanor and great sense of humor. He also married "his best customer," Rosamary McMahon, on Jan. 8, 1949.
In 1953, he decided to pursue another profession, that of salesman at Brown’s Men’s Wear, just across the street. In 1969, he started Ray’s Clothing Den together with fellow Cadillac business partner Jim Clark. He retired in 1985 after 38 years on Mitchell Street, and he and Rosamary moved to Ocala, Fla. She passed away on July 4, 1992, and he moved to Chicago in 1993 to live with his son, Dennis.
He is survived by four children, Gary (Melody) Bricault of Penfield, N.Y., Sharon (Pete) Swoboda of Lowell, Mich. and Dennis and Debra, both of Chicago; two brothers, Richard (Helen) of Ann Arbor and David of Saginaw; four grandchildren; three great-grandchildren and many nieces, nephews and dear friends in the Cadillac area.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 43 years, Rosamary; his parents; and seven brothers and sisters, Eugene, Loraine, Lucille, Robert, Ferdinand, Jerome and William.
The Mass of Christian burial will be held 11 a.m. Friday, June 4, 2010 at St. Ann Catholic Church in Cadillac with Rev. Fr. Santiago Hoyompa as celebrant. Burial will be at Maple Hill Cemetery in Cadillac. Visitation will be Thursday from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Peterson Funeral Home in Cadillac with the Rosary being prayed at 7 p.m.
