Farrie Douglas Black January 19, 1920 – December 21, 2011
Farrie Black, 91, of Newport, passed away peacefully on December 21, 2011. She was surrounded by her family and devoted caregivers. Mrs. Black was a faithful and life long member of Lincoln Avenue Baptist Church. She attended church services as long as her health permitted. Mrs. Black was a member of the Willing Workers Sunday School Class and the Loxley Circle. Mrs. Black served in various capacities over the years including church treasurer, Sunday School teacher, choir member and pulpit committee member. Mrs. Black and her late husband also enjoyed participating in the Joy Group. After retiring as office manager at Stokely Van Camp, Mrs. Black devoted her time to gardening, quilting, and church activities. Mrs. Black and her late husband especially enjoyed caring for their beloved great-grandson, Seth Moore. Mrs. Black was preceded in death by her husband the late Clarence Black, great-granddaughter, Andi Balch, her parents, the late Mr. and Mrs. Walter Douglas, sister Myrtle Hawkins. Mrs. Black is survived by her daughter, Donna Balch, Newport, granddaughters Abby Balch and Amy Quinton, both of Newport, great-grandson Seth Moore who Mrs. Black dearly loved and cherished, sister and brother-in-law Dorothy and Bill Hobbs, Corona, California. Mrs. Black is also survived by several nieces and nephews, her church family, neighbors and countless friends who faithfully visited, sent cards, prepared food, and offered prayers. The family would like to extend a special thank you to all of Mrs. Black’s devoted caregivers who provided love and compassion during Mrs. Black’s extended illness. The family also wants to thank Tammy Francis and the staff at Smoky Mountain Home Health and Hospice for providing care, compassion and guidance throughout Mrs. Black’s illness. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 Tuesday, December 27, 2011 at Manes Funeral Home Chapel with Dr. Rich Lloyd officiating. Burial will follow in Union Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 12:00 pm to 2:00 pm Tuesday prior to funeral services. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorials be made to First Baptist Church of Newport, 261 East Broadway, Newport, TN 37821 and Newport Grammar School Athletic Fund, 301 College Street, Newport, TN or the charity of your choice.
