Robert Lee Smith, age 69, a resident of Oak Ridge, died Saturday, July 5, 2008, at his home.
Mr. Smith was born June 15, 1939, in Oliver Springs. Following his high school graduation, he entered the United States Air Force and served his country during the Vietnam War.
After his military discharge he moved back to Oliver Springs and worked for the Department of Energy at the Y-12 plant. He later moved to Topeka, Kansas, for nine years, and onto Denver, Colorado, for 13 years. He made his final move back to Tennessee in 2004.
Robert was a retired electrician and a member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, Local No. 760.
He was an adventurer who became a pilot and flew the old taildragger airplanes. Additionally he enjoyed scuba diving, and acting, where he was cast in several films.
Robert was preceded in death by his parents, Howard Lee Smith and Edna Mae Giffin Smith.
He is survived by his wife, Cindy Craven Smith of Oak Ridge; four daughters, Kimberly Smith, Tracey Frost and husband, Lee, Leslie Price and husband, Jim, all of Topeka, Kansas, and Stacey Smith of Knoxville; a stepson, Brian Bostic and wife, Rebecca, of LaFollette; and by his grandchildren, Jessica and Jason Smith, Zach, Jacob, and Caleb Frost, and Cheyanne and Colt Price.
He is also survived by his sister, Barbara Palmer and husband, Dan, of Oak Ridge; and by extended family members and special friends.
The family will receive friends between the hours of 6 and 8 p.m. Tuesday, July 8, 2008, at Sharp Funeral Home. The funeral will follow at 8 p.m. in the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Ray Buchanan and the Rev. C.J. Holt officiating.
Graveside services with full military honors will be held at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, July 9, 2008, at the Tennessee Veterans Cemetery in Knoxville.
