Howard Lee Smith, 85, of Daytona Beach, Fla., and formerly of Oliver Springs, died Monday, March 1, 2004, at the home of his granddaughter, Lisa Farmer, who cared for him during the last 15 months.
Born Sept. 1, 1918, in Anderson County, he was the son of Albert Lee Smith and Carrie Elizabeth Price Smith.
Mr. Smith lived in Oliver Springs before moving to Daytona Beach in 2003. He was a member of Solway Baptist Church. Mr. Smith retired from Union Carbide working at the Oak Ridge K-25 site, the Y-12 Plant, and X-10. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II.
His wife of 65 years, Edna Mae Smith; two brothers, Jay Allen Smith and Carl Boyd Smith; and two sisters, Beulah Smith Sisson and Mable Smith Wilson, also died earlier.
In addition to his granddaughter and her husband, David, of Daytona Beach, Mr. Smith is survived by his son, Robert L. Smith and wife, Cindy, of Denver, Colo.; his daughter, Barbara Palmer and husband, Dan, of Oliver Springs; seven grandchildren, Kim Smith, Tracey Frost and Leslie Price, all of Kansas, Stacy Smith and Teresa Carroll, both of Clinton, and Jason Palmer and Melinda Palmer, both of Oliver Springs; 11 great-grandchildren; and by two brothers, Charles Smith and wife, Joan, and Clyde Smith, all of Oliver Springs.
The funeral will be at 8 p.m. Saturday, March 6, 2004, at Sharp Funeral Home in Oliver Springs with the Rev. C.J. Holt and the Rev. Ray Buchanan officiating.
A graveside service will be at 2 p.m. Sunday, March 7, at Oak Ridge Memorial Park with military rites.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.
