Joan “Joanie” Ward, age 73, of Gatlinburg, Tennessee, beloved mother and grandmother, peacefully went home to be with her Lord and Savior on Thursday, July 5, 2012. Joan was a member of New Hope Church in Kodak.
Joan was born September 2, 1938, in Maryville, Tennessee. She dedicated her life to her four children and family. A lifelong business woman, Joan and her late husband Don owned Morton’s Jewelry in Gatlinburg. After many years in retail, Joan and her son Jeff were led to open the House of Hope, a homeless shelter in Pigeon Forge. Through their hard work and dedication to the Lord, many people were led to a life in Christ. Throughout Joan’s life she never met a stranger and loved to share her testimony and the many blessings of God with anyone she encountered.
Joan was preceded in death by her husband Don Ward, parents Louis and Alma Morton, brother Louis O. Morton, Jr., and nieces Victoria and Angel Hope Morton.
Survivors: Son and daughter-in-law Don and Kathy Ward, daughter and son-in-law Teresa and Dennis Ogle, son Jeff Ward, son and daughter-in-law Greg and Diane Ward; sister and brother-in-law Linda and Tom Norton, sister-in-law Brigette Morton, brother and sister-in-law Danny and Vanessa Morton, and sister Kay Morton; aunt Evelyn Bain Lawson.
Grandchildren: Christy Korn, Cory Phinizy, January Beeler, Crystal Foust, Lauren Greer, Sara Ward, Heather Cordle, Brittney Booth, and Mallory Ward.
Great-grandchildren: Seth, Stefen, Sydney, and Kirkus Beeler; Logan, Cameron, Tanner, Connor, and Carley Phinizy; Courtney and Lindsey Korn; Dru and Jag Greer; Ward Colton Foust; Trent Cordle.
Nieces and nephews: Tommy Norton and Nikke Norton Johnston; Carrie Hunt Ball; Oliver Morton, Tracy Morton Starker, Samantha Pirskowski, Hans, Seth and Joseph Ballew; Tiffany Morton White and Holly Morton Husband; many great nieces and nephews.
The family would like to thank the wonderful hospice nurses and the many friends and family who visited Joan during her illness.
Memorials may be made to the “Joanie” Ward Memorial Fund at Citizens National Bank.
The family will receive friends from 2-4:45 PM Saturday with funeral services to begin at 5 PM in the West Chapel of Atchley Funeral Home. Family and friends will meet at 11 AM Sunday at Atchley Funeral Home to go in procession to Shiloh Cemetery in Pigeon Forge for a noon interment. (www.atchleyfuneralhome.com)
