Clayton Woodrow Norwood, age 84, of Del Rio, entered into eternal life Monday, September 20, 1999.
He received an honorable discharge from the US Army on September 23, 1945, serving with Company B 44th Armored Infantry.
He was a sgt. tank commander with campaigns included invasion of Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland, Central Europe, and served with Indian Head Division 741st Tank Battalion in the Ardennes Mountains.
He received the EAME Theater Ribbon with five bronze stars and an oak leaf, distinguished unit citation cluster, good conduct ribbon, purple heart, being wounded in Belgium December 21, 1944.
He retired from Burlington Industries and was also a retired farmer.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Cedia Virginia Morgan-Norwood; son, Russell Elliot; and beloved grandson, David Jack Rowland; parents, John Rubin and Jessie Baker Norwood; sister, Dovie Miller, (Gastonia, North Carolina); and brothers, Dayton Norwood (Spartenburg, South Carolina) Harrison Norwood, (Del Rio) Lewis Harding Norwood (Del Rio) Everett Norwood (Gastonia, North Carolina) Junior Norwood (Newport).
He is survived by his sons and daughters-in-law, Sherrill M. and Marsha Norwood, of Dandridge, Glen W. and Selma N. Norwood, of Hot Springs, North Carolina; daughters and sons-in-law, Linda Rowland and Tommy Kessinger and Vonda and Jeff Grigsby, of Del Rio; grandchildren, Tonia Leigh and Jason Norwood, of Del Rio, Melania Moore-Bailey and Steve Moore, of Newport, Glenn Scott Norwood, of Newport, and Brian Norwood, of Austin, Texas; five great-grandchildren; sister, Leona Youngblood and husband, A.J., of Geneau, Georgia; sisters-in-law, Margaret Shouse, of Morristown, Pearl Norwood, and Dorothy Norwood, of Del Rio, Desmond Norwood, of Newport, Jean Norwood, of Gastonia, North Carolina, Frances Morgan, of Moore, South Carolina, and Frances Morgan, of Campobello, North Carolina; and several nieces, nephews, and lifelong friends.
The funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at the Mulberry Gap United Methodist Church with the Rev. David Caughorn and Dr. F. Byron Chambers offciating. Interment will be in the Mulberry Gap Cemetery.
The body will lie in state from 1:30 til 2 p.m. at the church.
Family will receive friends Wednesday evening from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Funeral Home.
