Euston Paris ‘Red’ Cooke, age 83, of Maryville, passed away Monday, January 30, 2012, at Blount Memorial Hospital. He was born March 18, 1928, at Sharps Chapel in Union County, Tenn. He was a resident of Fairpark Healthcare Center and of the Baptist faith. His entire family was relocated to Maryville by TVA during the building of Norris Dam. He attended Porter High School before joining the U.S. Army. Euston became a non-commissioned officer during World War II and, upon discharge, was a corporal. He served in the 187th regimental combat team and earned the Victory Medal. In his younger days, he was a pilot and flew his own planes while working in Pontiac, Michigan, for General Motors. Later he returned to Maryville to marry Joy Atchley, his high school sweetheart. Euston was owner/operator of Twin City Texaco for a number of years. He also enjoyed farming and sharing stories about World War II, and studying the genealogy of Union County. Mr. Cooke was preceded in death by his parents, John Arley Cooke and Viola Mae Prince Cooke; his wife of 46 years, Joy Atchley Cooke; sister-in-law, Dorothy Cooke; and great-granddaughter, Felicity Chambers. Surviving children and spouses are Douglas and Vivian Cooke of Knoxville, Terri Cooke, Diane and Billy Anderson, Elaine and Mike Carroll, and Travis Cooke, all of Maryville; grandchildren and spouses, Steve and Stacy Cooke of Knoxville, Troy Dustin Cooke of Knoxville, Michael Jason and Jessie Cooke, Jared and Ashley Anderson of Atlanta, Ga.; Joshua Anderson of Maryville, Jessica Chambers of Knoxville, Laura Smith of Maryville, Stephanie Cooke and Heather Cooke of Maryville; great-grandchildren, Sydni Cooke, Kiley Cooke, Brennon Davis, Randy Smith, Raven Chambers, James Chambers; sister and brother-in-law, Winella and Edgar Seaton of Maryville; brother, Oneil Cooke; many nieces and nephew and special friends, Carl and Pearl Hagaman of Waterford, Michigan and J.T. and Kim Russell of Maryville. The family would like to express their sincere appreciation to all the staff and caregivers of Fairpark Healthcare for making Euston’s last three years special and treating him like their family. Also special thanks to Blount Memorial Hospital and the Palliative Care Team, ER, CCU, and 2nd floor nursing staff for their compassion and support during this difficult time. Graveside service will be 2 p.m. Friday, February 3, 2012 at Mount Lebanon Cemetery, 3508 Wildwood Road, with Elder Clarence Dotson officiating. The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m. Thursday, February 2, 2012 at Dotson Funeral Home.
