Woman dies in I-40 crash

A Tennessee Highway Patrol Trooper investigates a 1988 Toyota pickup truck involved
in a two-car accident Wednesday morning in the west bound lanes of Interstate 40 near
mile marker 436. Loretta H. McGaha, 67, of 3235 Messer Branch Road, in Hartford, died
after she and the driver, Wade Douglas Roberts, 64, of the same Hartford address, were
airlifted to the University of Tennessee Medical Center. The driver of the other vehicle
involved in the accident allegedly suffered slight injuries.

NEWPORT-A Hartford woman died following a two-vehicle accident Wednesday on Interstate 40in the west bound lanes about two miles east of the Cosby Highway.
Loretta H. McGaha, 67, of 3235 Messer Branch Road, in Hartford, was a passenger in a1988 Toyota pickup truck driven by Wade Douglas Roberts, 64, that was involved in the accident.
McGaha and Roberts were airlifted to the University of Tennessee Medical Center, where McGaha died, according to a report by Tennessee Highway Patrol Trooper Randy Spurgeon.
A Medical Center spokesperson said this morning that Roberts was in "stable"condition.
Kristal Dawn Workman, 31, of 634 Sage Road, in Cosby, was driving a 1995 Nissan Altima in the west bound lane just east of the 436 mile marker when her Nissan allegedly struck the rear of the Toyota pickup truck driven by Roberts.
Workman suffered only slight injuries and was taken by ambulance to Baptist Hospital of Cocke County.
McGaha,who allegedly was not wearing a seat belt, was ejected approximately 87 feet from the vehicle she was in when it veered sharply to the right, striking a guard rail, at about 10 a.m. McGaha came to rest in the right lane of westbound I-40.
No drugs or alcohol are suspected in the accident, which is under investigation,according to Spurgeon.
Both drivers gave conflicting reports about the accident, and charges are pending,according to Spurgeon.
The Toyota came to a rest on its right side. The Newport Rescue Squad had to use the jaws of life to extricate Roberts from his vehicle, according to Spurgeon.

Loretta McGaha passed away Wendesday, August 19, 2009 as a result of an automobile accident. She is preceded in death by sister Luarrie Cagle, brothers Dezzy Dean Hill, Hubert Hill, Edd Hill and Carl Hill.
She is survived by her children Yvonne Rollins of Hartford, Barbara McGaha of Newport, Shelia McGaha of Cosby, David McGaha of Hartford, James Issac (J.I.) and wife June McGaha of Hartford patricia McGaha of Cosby, special grandkids, Donny Rollins, Marty Rolins Angie Shults, Michelle Mcgaha, Nikki Brimmer, Joe McGaha Mary Lou McGaha, eight special great-grandkids, sisters, Betty Hall, Lee E. Perry, Ruby Braswell, Wilma Furgerson, Dorothy Ledford, Beaulah Dalton, Martha Trentham, very special friend, Wade Doug Roberts, special friends George Meeks Gay Coggins, George Franklin, Mike Payne, Kenneth and Brenda Hall and family.
Funeral service will be 7:00 p.m. Saturday, August, 22, 2009 in the chapel of Brown Funeral Home with Rev. Fred Laws officiating. Interment will be 12:00 p.m. Sunday August 23, 2009 at Hill Cemetery in Grassy Fork. The family will receive friends from 5-7 p.m. prior to the service at the funeral home.
