Motorcycle accident victim dies
James E. Briggs
Author: Duay O'Neil
NEWPORT-Funeral services are scheduled Wednesday evening for a local man who died Saturday as a result of injuries he sustained in an accident Thursday on I-40 in Jefferson County.
James E. (Bud) Briggs, Jr., 33, Huff Road, Cosby, was operating a 1997 Harley-Davidson in the eastbound lane near the 415 mile marker when his vehicle collided with a tractor-trailer.
According to the Tennessee Highway Patrol, Briggs' motorcycle clipped the front of the tractor-trailer when he attempted to pass the larger vehicle and merge into traffic.
The collision caused Briggs to lose control of his motorcycle which then skidded down the highway, throwing him onto the shoulder.
Briggs, who was wearing a helmet, was flown to the University of Tennessee Medical Center in Knoxville.
He was a grandson of the late Jay and Mae Briggs, well-known business owners in Newport. He is survived by his parents, one sister, and numerous other relatives.
Services for Briggs will be held at Manes Funeral Home. Interment will be in Union Cemetery on Thursday morning.
