One business that will be appearing on discount coupons to promote newspaper rack and store sales is Newport Quick Lube. Weeks ago I did get to chat with owner Jane Weems, the widow of grocer Doodle Weems, whom everybody must know. She asked me to return and talk to the manager and days later I found Ricky Starnes chilling out on a hot afternoon. It took me some talk and questions to recall him and his family. His father was the late Lloyd Starnes Jr., married to the former Wanda McCarter, who at one time worked for Doodle. I know the more famous uncle, Lester Starnes, and wonder if he still hangs out at Waffle House? Ricky reminded me that I must have photographed him as a child at Newport City Park for football season during the early 1970s, when I was sports editor. He went on to play varsity ball at Cocke County High School under coach Dale Chrisman. The Plain Talk billed Ricky as the biggest player on the team at 205 pounds. I forgot to ask if he has lost weight. After graduation he went to work with his uncle Lester whose partner was James Loveday at the Cosby Highway IGA. Do you remember this store? It is in the location now occupied by Western Auto thanks to the Burchette family. Later Gene French ran the IGA and it eventually closed.
