MAXIE, Va. — Veral Edith Foster Elswick , 82 years of age, of Maxie, Va., passed away Friday, May 13, 2011 at the Pikeville Medical Center, Pikeville, Ky., following a brief illness. Born in Madison County, N.C., she was the daughter of the late Dewey and Reva Rainey Foster . She was a resident of Buchanan County most of her life and was a member of the Harman Memorial Baptist Church. She was a devoted wife, loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and was a wonderful homemaker. Mrs. Elswick is survived by her husband of 62 years, Earl Elswick , Maxie, Va.; one daughter, Brenda Bowman and husband Delmer, Pounding Mill, Va.; two sons, Randy Elswick , Maxie, Va., Gary Elswick and wife Terri, Keen Mountain, Va.; one sister, Kathleen Foster Elswick , Dandridge, Tenn.; one brother, Homer Foster , Hot Springs, N.C.; two sisters-in-law, Shirley Foster , Morristown, Tenn., June Southgate and husband Herb, West Palm Beach, Fla.; five grandchildren, Cindy Bowman Silva and husband David, Sarasota, Fla., Stoney Bowman, Pounding Mill, Va., Shane Bowman and wife Tina, Grundy, Va., Bridget Elswick , Abingdon, Va., Gari Jo Elswick , Keen Mountain, Va. She is also survived by four great-grandchildren, Justin Silva, Hailee Silva, Dalton Blankenship and Lilly Bowman; special niece, Patty Elswick Coleman; special friend, Peggy Clevinger; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by one sister, Marie Foster Osteen; two brothers, Jack and Charles Foster ; sister-in-law, Macie Groves; two brothers-in-law, Vergil Elswick and Max Osteen.
Funeral services for Veral Edith Foster Elswick will be conducted Tuesday, May 17, 2011 at 1:00 p.m. at the Harman Memorial Baptist Church with Pastor Shea Shrader officiating with entombment to follow in Mountain Rest Mausoleum, Mountain Valley Memorial Park, Big Rock, Va. Friends may call at the Harman Memorial Baptist Church on Monday evening at 6:00 p.m. with services at 7:00 p.m. Active pallbearers will be Delmer Bowman, Stoney Bowman, Shane Bowman, Justin Silva, David Silva, Jim Belcher, Burl Ratliff and Doug Clevinger. Honorary pallbearers will be Roger Wilson, Bob Blankenship, Jeff Coleman, Kermit Clevinger and Bill Hankins. The family suggests that expressions of sympathy be made in the form of donations to the Harman Memorial Baptist Church Building Fund, 4321 Bull Creek Road, Maxie, VA 24628.
