- [S24] The Newport Plain Talk, (http://www.newportplaintalk.com), 15 Aug 2009.
Rev. Howard T. Munsey (Pastor Emeritus of Peace Free Will Baptist Church), age 83, of Morristown, went to be with the Lord on Friday, August 14, 2009, while at his home and surrounded by his loving family.
Howard Munsey joined the U. S. Navy in 1942 and served during both World War II and the Korean Conflict, achieving the rank of Petty Officer First Class. He worked for Magnavox, built homes, and was later part-owner of Hearthstone Long Homes in Dandridge, TN in the 1970s and 1980s.
Preacher Munsey delivered his first service in 1953 at the "Block Church" in Greeneville (First Free Will Baptist Church). During his lifetime, he organized two and pastored seven other Free Will Baptist Churches. He also had an effective revival and pulpit supply ministry.
Rev. Munsey was the founding pastor of Peace Free Will Baptist Church in Morristown, and he served as the president of Berea Ministries, Inc., a mission organization he created in the fifties to support the ministry of national pastors in Mexico, until his death. It was first chartered as the mission arm of a radio ministry called "Cross Beams Missions."
He was preceded in death by his parents Albert "Feeler" and Anna E. "Lizzie" Munsey; brothers: Benjamin, Bud, and Roy Glenn Munsey; sister Mary Munsey; son Rev. James Munsey; and brother-in-law Homer Lowe.
He is survived by his wife of 62 years Mildred Irene Collins Munsey; daughter and son-in-law Diane and Joe Foister, Jefferson City; son and daughter-in-law Timothy and Teresa Munsey, Fountain City; daughter-in-law and son-in-law Mitzi and Gary Satterfield; brothers: Robert, Ralph, Otis, and Herbert Munsey; sister Claudia Lowe; grandchildren: Trisha, Robin, Laura, Matthew, Rachel, and Megan; and great-grandchildren: Gwyneth and Magdelyn.
He will be remembered as a man who allowed himself to be an instrument of the Lord, a powerful pulpit orator, a loving husband, a father who strove to give dedicated Christian children to the world, and as a grandfather who loved each of his grandchildren and great-grandchildren "a bushel and a peck and a hug around the neck." He will be missed.
The family will receive friends at Mayes Family Services, West from 4-7 p.m. on Sunday. The funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Monday, August 17, 2009, at Peace Free Will Baptist Church in Morristown with interment to follow at Jefferson Memorial Gardens.
In lieu of flowers, please make donations to Berea Ministries, Inc., P. O. Box 57, Morristown, TN 37814-0057 or http://www.berreaministries.com.
Arrangements by Mayes Family Services of Morristown, West.
