Fancher: "Prepare yourself for future in academics"

Cocke County native Houston Fancher, left, now Director of Basketball Operations at UTK, was keynote speaker at the Cocke County Academic Olympics banquet Friday at Carson Springs Conference Center. NEWPORT-Houston Fancher, keynote speaker at the Cocke County Academic Olympics banquet Friday urged his audience, "Whatever you want to do in life, start setting goals now. Work hard to separate yourselves from those who would pull you down. Be selfish when separating yourself to do well in school. Surround yourselves with people who are as driven for success as you are. That will make you successful."
Fancher, Director of Basketball Operations at UTK, is a Cocke County native, son of Dean Fancher of Newport and the late Gene Fancher. A graduate of Newport Grammar and Cocke County High Schools, he has spent over 20 years coaching on the college and university levels, including the head coaching position at Appalachian State University.
Speaking to seventh- and eighth-grade students who vied for honors in this year's competition, Fancher added, "Put yourselves with positive people and you will be positive."
