Gerlene Kirby celebrates 90th birthday
Gerlene Kirby, of Maryville, celebrated her 90th birthday with a party at the Blount County Public Library. She was born May 7, 1922 at Elkmont, the seventh of 10 children born to William “Willie” and Polly Ogle Stinnett. Some of her fondest memories are of growing up at Elkmont and Pigeon Forge, living in Oklahoma as a teenager where she and her sister Vada where outstanding basketball players in school and moving to Blount County in 1938 where she met her husband, the late Clyde G. Kirby.
Her family includes daughter Linda Kirby, son and daughter-in-law George “Sonny and Peggy Kirby. Mrs. Kirby has three grandchildren — John and Catherine Kirby of Chattanooga, Jennifer and Brock Hirschey, of Virginia, and Robert and Chelsey Kirby, of Maryville. She has seven great-grandchildren — Grace, Joseph and Rose Kirby, Cordia and Lydia Hirschey and Brayden and Carter Kirby Also attending her party were her sister Lorene Campbell, of Maryville, brother Wendell “Bill” and wife Anah, of Pigeon Forge, along with several nieces, nephews and friends.
Mrs. Kirby enjoys spending time with her family and has traveled in all 50 states and 17 countries.

Gerlene (Geraldine) Stinnett Kirby, age 90, of Maryville, passed away Monday, February 4, 2013. She was born at Elkmont, TN on May 7, 1922. She was the seventh child of Willie & Polly Ogle Stinnett. Gerlene was preceded in death by: Parents; Brothers, Clell, Gentry, & James; Sisters, Pearl, Della, Dorothy Stinnett Cogdill & Vada Stinnett Pack; Beloved Husband, Clyde G. Kirby. Survivors include: Daughter, Linda C. Kirby; Son & Daughter-in-law, George Clyde (Sonny) & Peggy Kirby; Grandchildren, John & Catherine Kirby of Chattanooga, Jennifer & Brock Hirschy of Virginia, Robert & Chelsey Kirby of Maryville; Great-Grandchildren, Grace, Joseph, & Rose Kirby, Cordia & Lydia Hirschy, Brayden & Carter Kirby; Sister, Lorene Stinnett Campbell; Brother & Sister-in-law, Wendell & Anah Stinnett of Pigeon Forge; several wonderful nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. Gerlene was a Godly Christian woman who read her Bible and prayed daily. She was a member of Everett Hills Baptist Church. Family will receive friends from 5:00 until 7:00 PM, February 8, 2013 at Smith Trinity Chapel. Funeral service will follow at 7:00 PM with Pastor Doug Hayes and Rev. Henry Linginfelter officiating.
