Col. Vernon C. Moore, 86, our beloved husband, father, papaw and friend continued his final journey of this life and on September 30 he went to be with his Heavenly Father. He went peacefully at his home.
Vernon began his military service in 1939 when he joined the National Guard, which was activated in 1941. After World War II, he operated a grocery business with his brothers until he was recalled to active service in 1950. He served continuously on active duty from his recall until his retirement in 1969. His last assignment was as post commander at Leighten Barracks, Wurzburg, Germany. After retiring from the Army, Vernon and Alice moved back to Blount County. He became a real estate broker and then retired from Bank of Maryville/First TN Bank as Vice President after 18 years. He was involved with the Civitan Club for many years, and was an active member of the D.D. Club (Done Done It).
Vernon received military honors and numerous medals which included the Legion of Merit, Bronze Star Medal, Korean Service Medal, United Nations Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Four Overseas Bars, Armed Forces Reserve Medal, Republic of Korea Presidential Unit Citation, World War II Victory Medal, European-African-Middle East Campaign Medal, American Campaign Medal and American Defense Medal.
He was preceded in eternal life by his parents, George and Mary Elise Moore; in-laws, John and Bertice Caylor; brothers, Earl and G.A. Moore; sister, Louise Best; nephew, R. G. Kerr; cousin, J. C. Moore.
He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Alice Moore; sons, Fred Moore, Keith Moore and wife Annette; daughters, Kelly Dyer and husband, John Dyer, Sr., Carla Moore; grandchildren, Bryan Moore, Kim and Barry Whitehead, Jessica and James Thompson, Sr., Troy Dyer, John Dyer, Jr., Matthew LeQuire, Ryan and Wendy Whitehead, Josh Whitehead and Carol Bradley, Kase Whitehead and Marsha Mattison; great grandchildren, Jenna Thompson, James Thompson, Jr., Abby Dyer, Taylor and Bryson Whitehead, Autumn and Dalton Vanderburg and Brooke Bradley; brother, Clinton Moore; sisters, Imogene Moore, Etheleen Clabough and husband Melvin; caregivers, Alicia Waterman, Shari Mitchell, Amber Hendricks, Sophia Hall, Lavern Ogle, Connie VanDrunen and Beth.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Friday in McCammon-Ammons-Click Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor L. P. Ford officiating. The interment will follow in Grandview Cemetery with full Military Honors.
The family will receive friends from 6-8:00 p.m. Thursday at McCammon-Ammons-Click Funeral Home, Maryville.
