[S142] Newspaper Article, 11 Nov 2006. Mr. Mike Houston Davis , age 88, of 404 Hollis Road, Ellenboro, NC passed away Thursday, November 9, 2006 at the Mission Hospital in Asheville, NC. Mr. Davis was born in Townsend, Tennessee on March 7, 1918 to the late James Shannon Davis and Louisa Dunn Davis . Mr. Davis was a veteran of the U. S. Air Force having served during World War II as Sergeant and member of the 17th Photo Tech Squadron attached to the Third Army under the leadership of General George Patton. He received his BS degree from Milligan College, Tennessee and his MS degree from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. He was a teacher and coach at Cool Springs High School from 1949 until 1953 and principal of Ellenboro Elementary School from 1953 until 1977. Mr. Davis was a former Isothermal Community College Trustee. He was a member of the Oak Grove United Methodist Church where he was the Men's Sunday School Teacher. After retiring his hobbies included Angus cattle farming and carpentry. Mr. Davis touched the lives of many as educator, coach, friend and father. Mr. Davis is survived by his wife of 63 years, Ruth Webb Davis of the home; two sons, Michael Davis and wife Robin and Tim Davis and wife Kim all of Ellenboro; two brothers, George Davis and Charlie Davis ; a sister Beulah Gregory; and grandchildren Nathan & Sarah Davis , Aaron & Sheena Davis , Jordan Davis , Jade Davis , and Taylor Grace Davis . Funeral services for Mr. Davis will be held at 4: 00 p. m. Sunday, November 12, 2006, at the Oak Grove United Methodist Church with Dr. Norman Hubbard officiating. The family will receive friends Sunday from 2: 00 until 4: 00 p.m. at the church. Burial will follow in the Oak Grove United Methodist Church Cemetery with military honors accorded by the Rutherford County Honor Guard. In lieu of flowers the family request that memorial be made to the Oak Grove United Methodist Church, 1491 Oak Grove Church Road, Ellenboro, NC 28040.
